WhatsApp Template Approval Time: How Long It Takes and How to Get Approved Faster (2026). Guide from WatsBerry.

    Quick answers

How long does WhatsApp template approval take?
Meta says it can take up to 24 hours for an approval decision. Many straightforward templates are approved much faster, sometimes within minutes, but plan campaigns assuming the full 24 hours.
Why is my WhatsApp template stuck in review?
Templates that need manual review, contain borderline content, or are submitted in large numbers at once can take longer. If it's still In review after 24 hours, check WhatsApp Manager and Business Support Home for notices, then contact your provider or Meta support.
How can I get a WhatsApp template approved faster?
Choose the right category, include sample values for every variable, use clear business language, avoid starting or ending with a variable, keep variables few relative to the text, don't ask for sensitive information, and make sure the wording isn't a duplicate of an existing template.

    Short answer

Meta says an approval decision on a WhatsApp template can take up to 24 hours, and simple, well-formed templates are often approved within minutes. Approved templates show as Active – Quality pending in WhatsApp Manager (APPROVED in the API). To get approved fast: pick the correct category, add samples for every variable, don't start or end with a variable, keep variables few and sequential, and don't duplicate an existing template. If rejected, edit and resubmit, or appeal (decided within 24 hours).

What Meta officially says about timing

    From Meta's template review documentation:

    • Templates are checked by a combination of automated systems and manual review.
    • "It can take up to 24 hours for an approval decision to be made."
    • When decided, you get a WhatsApp Manager notification, an email to Business Suite admins, and a webhook (template status update).
    • Appeals must include a sample and are decided within 24 hours.

There's no paid "fast lane" for template review. Anyone selling "instant approval" can only help you submit cleaner templates.

    What each template status means

    Per Meta's templates overview:

Status in WhatsApp Manager Can you send it? What it means
In review No Still being reviewed (up to 24 hours)
Rejected No Failed review; edit and resubmit, or appeal
Active – Quality pending Yes Approved; no quality feedback yet
Active – High quality Yes Little or no negative feedback
Active – Medium quality Yes Some negative feedback or low reads
Active – Low quality Yes, but at risk Could be paused or disabled soon
Paused No Paused due to negative feedback or low reads
Disabled No Disabled after repeated negative feedback

    The fast-approval checklist

Use this before you hit Submit. It's built from Meta's listed rejection reasons.

    Category and content

    1. Choose the right category. Order and booking updates for a specific transaction = Utility. Offers, launches, re-engagement = Marketing. OTP only = Authentication. Since April 2025, Meta approves a "utility" template it considers marketing as Marketing, so labelling honestly avoids surprises (see template categorization).
    2. Write like a real business. Name your business, state the purpose, avoid ALL CAPS and excessive emojis.
    3. No threats. "Pay today or we'll take legal action" style messages are a listed rejection reason.
    4. Never ask for sensitive identifiers: full card numbers, bank account numbers, Aadhaar or other national ID numbers.
    5. Follow the WhatsApp Business and Commerce policies. Some products (e.g., certain regulated goods) can't be promoted.

    Variables and format

    1. Use correct braces: {{1}} or named {{customer_name}}. No missing or mismatched braces.
    2. Sequential numbering: {{1}}, {{2}}, {{3}}, not {{1}}, {{3}}.
    3. No special characters inside variables (#, $, %).
    4. Don't start or end the body with a variable. End with a full stop or a fixed sentence instead.
    5. Not too many variables for the length. Add fixed context text around them.
    6. Add sample values for every variable and a sample image, video or document for media headers.

    Duplicates and volume

    1. Avoid duplicates. A template with the same body and footer as an existing one is rejected (authentication templates excepted).
    2. Don't flood the queue. Meta allows up to 100 template creations per Messaging account per hour; submitting dozens of near-identical templates at once is a bad idea anyway.

    A before-and-after example (hypothetical)

Likely to be slow or rejected (submitted as Utility):

    {{1}} BIG SALE!!! Flat 50% off only today. Click now {{2}}

Starts with a variable, ends with a variable, promotional content labelled as utility, no business name.

    Clean marketing version:

Hi {{customer_name}}, the Diwali sale at Kaveri Handlooms is live until Sunday. Sarees and dupattas are up to 40% off. Tap below to browse.

Button: Shop now (URL) · Footer: Reply STOP to opt out

    Clean utility version (different purpose):

Hi {{customer_name}}, your order {{order_id}} from Kaveri Handlooms has been shipped and should reach you by {{delivery_date}}. Tap below to track it.

Stuck "In review" for more than 24 hours?

    1. Refresh WhatsApp Manager → Message templates. The status may have changed without a notification reaching you.
    2. Check Business Support Home for a rejection notice. Meta says rejection reasons appear there.
    3. Check your account status. If your WhatsApp account has a policy restriction, template creation can be blocked for a period. See Meta's policy enforcement page.
    4. Don't resubmit the same template under a new name. It can be rejected as a duplicate and adds to the queue.
    5. Raise it with your provider or Meta Direct Support, with the template name, language and Messaging account ID.

Plan your launch around review time

    When What to do
3–5 days before Draft templates, check them against this checklist
2–3 days before Submit all templates; fix any rejections the same day
1 day before Test-send every approved template to your team
Launch day Send to a small opted-in segment first, then scale

For a clinic or salon going live with reminders, submit booking confirmation, reminder, reschedule and review request templates together so the full journey is ready on day one.

    Editing approved templates

    Meta's template management docs say:

    • Only APPROVED, REJECTED or PAUSED templates can be edited.
    • Approved templates can be edited up to 10 times in 30 days, or once in 24 hours. Rejected or paused templates can be edited unlimited times.
    • You can't change the category of an approved template.
    • Edited templates are reviewed again, so don't edit a template on the morning of a campaign.

    Where WatsBerry fits

WatsBerry runs template campaigns on Meta's official Cloud API, and I'm happy to review drafts for clinics, salons, coaches, realtors and D2C brands before you submit. Approval decisions are Meta's, and we don't promise them. Meta bills WhatsApp usage to your own payment method (0% markup on Meta's per-message rates), and WatsBerry charges a separate platform plan (₹1,599 / ₹2,999 / ₹5,999 per month + GST).

    Next step

Paste a template you're about to submit into a chat with me via watsberry.com, and I'll point out anything likely to slow approval.
