How to Add a Payment Method for WhatsApp Business API in India (2026 Step-by-Step). Guide from WatsBerry.

    Quick answers

Why do I need to add a payment method to WhatsApp Business API?
Meta charges per delivered message for marketing, utility and authentication templates, and from October 1, 2026 for service messages beyond 1,000 free per number per month. Without a valid payment method (or a provider credit line), Meta won't deliver chargeable messages.
Which cards are accepted for WhatsApp Business API billing?
Meta's help article says you can pay with Visa or Mastercard credit cards, and it does not accept American Express or digital payments such as PayPal. Indian cards usually need online and international transactions enabled; ask your bank if a charge is declined.
Do I need GST details to pay Meta for WhatsApp in India?
Meta may ask for tax information as part of your business information when you add a payment method. Adding your GSTIN helps you receive proper invoices. Many Indian businesses report billing errors clear only after tax details are completed.

    Short answer

In Meta Business Suite, go to Settings → Billing & payments → Messaging accounts, click Add payment method next to your WhatsApp (messaging) account, and enter a Visa or Mastercard card plus your business and tax details. Meta doesn't accept American Express or PayPal here. Each messaging account needs its own payment method. Since October 1, 2026, you also need one for service messages beyond the 1,000 free per number per month.

Why this matters more after October 2026

Meta charges per delivered message, and the list of what's charged got longer on October 1, 2026. Per Meta's pricing documentation:

    • Template messages (marketing, utility, authentication) are charged per delivery.
    • Service messages (your free-form replies) are charged after 1,000 free per business number per month.
    • Utility templates inside the 24-hour window are charged again.

Meta also said that if a business has no payment method, it will deliver service messages within the free tier but not after the free tier is used up. Businesses without a payment method on file by September 30, 2026 would stop having service messages delivered once those became charged. If your support replies suddenly stopped going out mid-month, check this first.

    Before you start

    You'll need:

    1. Admin access to the Meta business portfolio that owns the WhatsApp Business Account (WABA), or permission to manage payment settings for that messaging account.
    2. Setup completed. Meta's help article says you can't add a card until the steps in your developer console (or your provider's Embedded Signup) are done.
    3. A Visa or Mastercard credit card in the business's name, with online and international transactions enabled.
    4. Your legal business name, address and GSTIN exactly as on your GST certificate.

Step-by-step: add a card (Meta Business Suite)

These steps follow Meta's help article Add a credit card to your WhatsApp Business Platform account:

    1. Open Meta Business Suite and go to Settings.
    2. Click Billing & payments.
    3. Click Messaging accounts.
    4. Find your WhatsApp account and click Add payment method. If one exists, you'll see View details.
    5. Follow the prompts, enter your card details and click Save. Complete the bank OTP or 3-D Secure check when asked.
    6. Add your business information (legal name, address, tax ID) and click Save.
    7. Check the account's Settings tab to confirm the card shows as active.

Tip: if you manage several WhatsApp accounts (one per brand or city), repeat this for each. Meta says each messaging account keeps its own billing relationship, payment method and spend limits.

Payment methods: what works in India

    Method For whom Notes
Credit card (Visa / Mastercard) Businesses billed directly by Meta Meta's help article lists these; Amex and PayPal not accepted
Credit line (monthly invoicing) Solution Partners, large direct customers Meta invoices monthly; in India now from Facebook India in INR
Provider's shared credit line Businesses using a BSP that bills you You pay the provider, often via prepaid wallet

Many Indian businesses ask about UPI or debit cards. Meta's help article only lists Visa and Mastercard credit cards for this flow, and third-party guides report mixed results with other options. If a debit card or RuPay card fails, try a Visa or Mastercard credit card in the business name before anything else.

INR billing: the December 31, 2026 deadline

Meta launched billing localization for India on January 1, 2026. According to its pricing page and Help Centre article on India billing localization:

    • It applies to partners and direct clients whose Sold-To country is India in Billing Hub.
    • All WABAs in such a portfolio must move to INR by December 31, 2026.
    • From January 1, 2027, Meta will no longer deliver messages from eligible accounts still in another currency.
    • Invoices for eligible monthly-invoicing customers come from Facebook India with 18% GST (IGST, or CGST + SGST for Haryana billing addresses).
    • A Currency Migration API (available since June 1, 2026) clones your WABA into a new INR WABA and moves numbers, templates and Flows. Credit cards can't be attached through the API, so you add the card manually on the new WABA before completing migration.

If you onboarded through a provider, ask them now whether your account is affected and who runs the migration.

Common errors when adding a card (and fixes)

Meta's support page for onboarded clients lists these payment errors:

Error you see What it usually means What to do
"Card hasn't been verified" Bank OTP failed or wasn't received Retry carefully; confirm you can receive the bank OTP; try another card
"Couldn't save payment method… maximum number of ad accounts" That card is already linked to the maximum number of accounts Use a different card. Meta says the limit can't be raised.
"We noticed something unusual…" Security check or bank restriction Ask your bank about blocks; try another card
"Something went wrong" Temporary error Try again in a few days or with another card

If messages fail later with error 131042 (business eligibility payment issue), that's a different problem. See our guide on fixing it.

After you add the card: three good habits

    1. Set a spend alert. Watch WhatsApp Manager → Insights for cost by category.
    2. Keep a backup card in case the primary one expires during a sale.
    3. Track the 1,000 free service messages per number. Set an internal alert near 800.

    Where WatsBerry fits

WatsBerry uses a pass-through model. During Embedded Signup on the official Cloud API, you add your own payment method to your own WhatsApp Business Account, and Meta bills WhatsApp usage directly to you at Meta's rates (0% markup), with your GST details on Meta's invoice. WatsBerry charges a separate platform plan of ₹1,599, ₹2,999 or ₹5,999 per month + GST. No wallet top-ups, but also no "free WhatsApp". Every chargeable message is on your Meta bill.
