The shared inbox lists WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger threads with a channel badge. Agents reply on the same channel the customer used. Instagram comments are not auto-converted into WhatsApp chats. We do not silently rewrite an Instagram commenter into a WhatsApp template blast.

That is stricter than some marketing lines that say “comments become WhatsApp.” The shipped behaviour is comment → Instagram/Messenger DM + shared inbox, plus CTWA → WhatsApp when you buy WhatsApp ads.

Comment-to-DM, menus, and what you must subscribe

Instagram. Business or Creator account linked to a Facebook Page. Comment public replies need instagram_manage_comments. Private DMs also need instagram_manage_messages and pages_messaging. Subscribe Meta webhooks for messages, messaging_postbacks, feed, and comments.

Messenger. Page webhooks must include feed (Facebook comments do not arrive on the Instagram object). Public comment replies need pages_manage_engagement; private replies need pages_messaging. If you connected Ads/CTWA after Messenger, use Refresh Page webhooks so leadgen subscribe does not wipe feed/messages.

Click-to-WhatsApp vs social DMs

Click-to-WhatsApp ads send Meta ad traffic to the WABA. Ice breakers and a first auto-reply can start the WhatsApp thread; a person should still own objections. Playbook: CTWA in India (India-titled; Cloud API pattern is the same elsewhere).

Social DMs are not a licence to add those users to a WhatsApp marketing list. You still need a WhatsApp opt-in to message them on WhatsApp.

Do Instagram comments become WhatsApp chats automatically?

No. Comment-to-DM sends a public comment reply and/or a private Instagram or Messenger DM. Those threads land in the shared inbox as Instagram or Messenger — not as a new WhatsApp conversation. WhatsApp ads are a separate Click-to-WhatsApp path.

Can the AI chatbot answer Instagram and Messenger DMs?

Optional, per channel on Social → Connection. Unmatched DMs can use Chatbots + Bot Knowledge. Keyword / menu / auto DMs still win first. The knowledge chatbot does not reply to comments, giveaway buttons, or ice breakers.

Are Instagram story mention automations available?

Not yet. Use comment and DM automations for now.
