Quick answers
- How do I track sales from Click-to-WhatsApp ads?
- Capture the referral data and ctwa_clid from the first WhatsApp message, save it on the contact, and link later orders or payments to that contact. Then report spend, chats and revenue per campaign, and optionally send purchases to Meta through the Conversions API.
- What is ctwa_clid?
- It is the Click-to-WhatsApp click identifier Meta includes in the referral data of the first message a user sends after tapping a CTWA ad. It lets you connect later conversions to the ad click.
- Are messages free after a Click-to-WhatsApp ad?
- Meta opens a 72-hour free entry point window if the user messaged from a CTWA ad or Page call-to-action on the Android or iOS app and you reply within 24 hours. During that window all messages, including templates, are free.

Short answer: When someone taps a Click-to-WhatsApp (CTWA) ad and messages you, Meta passes referral data with that first message, including a click identifier called ctwa_clid and details of the ad. To attribute revenue, your WhatsApp platform must save that referral on the contact, then link later events (a form submitted, a payment, a Shopify order) back to the same contact and click. Sending those outcomes to Meta through the Conversions API lets Meta optimise the ads for real results instead of just chats. Without this, Ads Manager shows conversations started, not sales.
Why CTWA attribution is hard
In Ads Manager, a CTWA campaign usually reports messaging conversations started. That tells you how many people opened a chat, not how many bought. The sale often happens:
- inside the chat, after a few messages with an agent
- on your website, from a link you sent
- days later, after a follow-up template
- offline, at a store or clinic
If your chat tool does not remember which ad started the conversation, the sale shows up as "direct" or "unknown", and good campaigns look bad.
How CTWA attribution works, step by step
1. The click
A person taps your ad on Facebook or Instagram and WhatsApp opens with a pre-filled message or ice breakers.
2. The first message carries referral data
When they send the message, the WhatsApp Business API webhook includes a referral object with the source ad and a ctwa_clid. This only happens on the first message from that ad click, so it must be captured immediately.
3. Save the referral on the contact
Your platform should store the ctwa_clid, ad and campaign details against the contact and the conversation. Now every later event can be tied back to that click.
4. Record outcomes
Outcomes you can link to the click include:
- Lead: a qualification form submitted in WhatsApp
- Booking: an appointment created
- Purchase: a Shopify order or a payment link paid
- Qualified conversation: an agent marks the chat as a real prospect
5. Send outcomes back to Meta (optional but powerful)
Using Meta's Conversions API, your platform can send the lead or purchase event with the ctwa_clid. Meta can then optimise delivery toward people likely to take that action, not just people likely to start a chat.
6. Report
Put spend, chats, leads and revenue side by side per campaign. That is your real cost per lead and return on ad spend.
The 72-hour free entry point window
CTWA ads also change what you pay Meta for messages. According to Meta's pricing documentation:
- When a user messages you from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad or a Facebook Page call-to-action button on the Android or iOS app, a normal 24-hour customer service window opens.
- If you reply within 24 hours, a free entry point window opens for 72 hours, starting when you respond.
- While it is open, all messages, including templates, are free.
- Desktop and web WhatsApp apps are not supported for this.
Practical tip: reply fast. A bot that answers within seconds opens the 72-hour window, giving you three days of free follow-ups to qualify and close the lead.
A worked example
A skincare D2C brand (see WhatsApp for fashion and D2C for more D2C playbooks) spends ₹30,000 on CTWA ads in a month (illustrative numbers).
| Metric | Count |
|---|---|
| Chats started (from Ads Manager) | 1,200 |
| Chats with ctwa_clid captured | 1,200 |
| Qualification forms completed | 420 |
| Orders tied to a CTWA click | 96 |
| Revenue from those orders | ₹1,34,400 |
- Cost per chat: ₹30,000 ÷ 1,200 = ₹25
- Cost per qualified lead: ₹30,000 ÷ 420 = about ₹71
- Cost per order: ₹30,000 ÷ 96 = ₹312.50
- Return on ad spend: ₹1,34,400 ÷ ₹30,000 = 4.48x
Without attribution, the team would only see "1,200 chats at ₹25" and could not tell which campaign produced the 96 orders. These numbers are an example to show the maths, not a benchmark.
Common attribution mistakes
- Losing the referral. If the first message is handled by a tool that does not save referral data, it is gone.
- Mixing ad and organic chats. Tag CTWA contacts separately so organic chats do not inflate or hide results.
- Counting clicks as results. Chats started is a top-of-funnel metric.
- Ignoring delays. Meta's reporting often updates with a delay, so do not judge a campaign in the first hours.
- Not closing the loop. If purchases happen on Shopify, the order must be matched back to the WhatsApp contact.

Do I need the Conversions API for CTWA attribution?
No. You can attribute results inside your platform without it. The Conversions API adds value by sending real outcomes to Meta so it can optimise ad delivery.
Can WatsBerry attribute CTWA ads I create in Meta Ads Manager?
Yes. WatsBerry captures the referral and ctwa_clid on your connected WhatsApp number regardless of where the ad was created. In-app ad creation is optional.
Why does Ads Manager show fewer results than my WhatsApp tool?
Ads Manager typically reports conversations started and updates with a delay. Your WhatsApp tool may record outcomes like leads and orders that Meta only sees if you send them through the Conversions API.
